Guided Maine Moose Hunts

From pre-season scouting to field dressing your trophy bull — here's exactly what to expect when you book a guided moose hunt with us.

The Hunt Process

Every guided moose hunt follows a proven rhythm. Here's what your 6 days in the North Maine Woods will look like.

🔭

1. Pre-Season Scouting

Before the season opens, our guides are in the woods — checking trail cameras, monitoring moose movement patterns, and identifying active feeding areas. This groundwork gives us the edge when your hunt begins.

🌅

2. Morning Hunt

Each day starts before dawn. After a hearty camp breakfast, you and your guide head out. Mornings are prime time — moose are active after feeding through the night, and the cool air carries sound well for calling.

📯

3. Calling & Spotting

Your guide uses cow calls, bull grunts, and raking to simulate moose activity. During the rut, dominant bulls will come in to investigate or challenge. When a bull responds, the adrenaline is unmatched.

🎯

4. The Shot

When a legal bull presents a clean shot, your guide will talk you through the setup. Shot distances in the Maine woods are typically under 200 yards. We want an ethical, clean harvest.

🔪

5. Field Dressing & Retrieval

After the shot, the real work begins. Your guide handles or supervises the field dressing. We then extract the moose from the woods — using established trails, ATVs where possible, and good old-fashioned muscle when needed.

🏕️

6. Back at Camp

Back at camp, we hang and cool the meat properly. Bud or Wayne will have a hot meal waiting. Share stories around the wood stove, check the day's photos, and rest up for tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a typical day on a guided moose hunt look like?

Wake up around 4:30-5:00 AM for a hot breakfast. Head out before first light to prime calling locations. Morning hunt runs until mid-day, then break for lunch and rest. Head back out for the afternoon/evening hunt around 3:00 PM until dark. Return to camp for dinner and stories around the stove.

How do you call in a bull moose?

We use a combination of cow calls (to attract bulls looking for a mate), bull grunts (to challenge territorial bulls), and raking (simulating a bull thrashing brush with his antlers). During the rut, these calls can bring bulls in from surprising distances. We tailor the calling sequence to the situation and the bull's response.

What happens after I harvest a moose?

Your guide will help field dress the moose on site. We then transport it back to camp where it's hung and cooled. From there, we arrange transport to a licensed meat processor. You can take the meat home or have it shipped. If it's a trophy bull, we'll also help coordinate with a taxidermist.

Can I bring a non-hunting companion?

Your hunt includes a sub-permittee who can also hunt (one moose between you). If you want to bring an additional non-hunting observer, please discuss this with us in advance. Our camps have limited space and we need to plan accordingly.
